From 2002 to 2004, ECODIT worked with Dar Al-Handasah, a leading Lebanese engineering firm, and L’Institut d'Aménagement et d'Urbanisme de la Région d'Ile-de-France‏ (IAURIF, France) to develop the National Physical Master Plan for the Lebanese Territory (or Schéma Directeur d'Aménagement du Territoire Libanais - SDATL). ECODIT focused on the rational use of natural resources as one of the five key themes in developing the plan, and assisted in land use mapping through the compilation of a complete inventory of protected sites in Lebanon using topographic maps and ground validation. ECODIT also acted as a liaison between the project team and dozens of government agencies and institutions in the country, and organized consultations with government agencies, subject-matter professionals and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The Master Plan, endorsed by the Lebanese Council of Ministers (COM) in 2009, constitutes today a valuable planning tool that helps the Government of Lebanon in making lasting and informed decisions on the forms and orientations of Lebanon’s land use. It also serves as a reference document for several regional and local administrations to prepare, review and approve new urban and sectoral master plans.
