ECOConsult of Jordan in partnership with ECODIT Liban carried out an environmental assessment of three key components of the Dana Village Restoration project.  The components were: 1) construction of a reservoir and pipe network for the storage and distribution of potable water; 2) construction of a pipe network and constructed wetland for the collection and treatment of wastewater; and 3) construction of a septic tank or leach field to serve the expanded Dana Guesthouse. Dana Village lies at the edge of the renowned Dana Biosphere Reserve and the overall project’s fundamental aims are to support local economic development and biodiversity conservation through eco-tourism. Renovation work had been underway for almost two years and USAID determined that the infrastructure works listed above required an environmental assessment (EA) to be conducted according to USAID and Ministry of Environment (MoE) guidelines. ECODIT Liban helped prepare the Scoping Brief and prepared and delivered one of the two Scoping Sessions.  The scoping process helped reveal serious flaws in the RSCN’s initially proposed treatment plant site.  The EA was delayed by almost one year and a half until the Roal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) was able to secure a new site that was feasible and acceptable from all perspectives, with the advice of the EA team. ECODIT Liban also prepared an analysis of alternatives, prepared the Proposed Project Description, developed the ecological and treatment components of the EIA and supported the overall assessment of impacts and development of the associated environmental monitoring and management plan (EMMP).
