Phase I (February 2004-July 2004), the Pilot Regional Exchange Facility (REF) on Water Demand Management (WDM): ECODIT planned, organized and facilitated three regional exchange missions for senior policy makers and researchers from Algeria, Lebanon and Syria. The purpose of these regional exchanges was to explore good practices, skills and know how in wastewater treatment in Jordan and Water Users’ Association in both Egypt and Tunisia. ECODIT prepared mission reports and a final report at the end of the pilot activity to harness lessons learned in methodology, results and capacity development for the establishment of a sustainable REF to be implemented by IDRC as part of its WDM program. ECODIT also designed and produced a brochure on the achievements and lessons learned under the pilot activity and published several related articles in regional environmental magazines. Phase II (December 2004-July 2005) - Water Demand Initiative in the Middle East and North Africa (WADImena): Building on the success of the pilot REF, IDRC decided to extend and expand the REF under WADImena (2004-2008). ECODIT planned, organized and facilitated two additional exchanges on participatory irrigation management and supplemental irrigation involving five countries (Tunisia, Syria, Algeria, Morocco and Yemen) and more than a dozen host agencies. Mission programs consisted of targeted field visits, village meetings with farmers and community leaders, roundtables with host agencies and a wrap-up and evaluation session.Planned activities for 2004-2005 then included: (1) Reverse Exchange Mission (Tunisia to Syria),(2) Regional Exchange Mission (involving Morocco),(3) Country Consultation in Yemen and follow up,and (4) Overseas Mission i.e. to Europe, Canada or another 'developing' country in the Asian or African regions.
